Calling all women: App State, NC Research Campus, want you!

KANNAPOLIS - Women 18 to 75 years of age are invited to kick-off 2013 with the Appalachian State Human Performance Laboratory at the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC) in Kannapolis. Researchers, led by principal investigator and lab director David Nieman, DrPH, are recruiting participants now to be part of a research study that will be conducted from January to April 2013. The purpose of the study is to measure potential health benefits of a dietary supplement beverage.

To be eligible, women must be healthy, non-smokers and overweight by a minimum of 25 or more pounds. While in the study, participants will drink four fluid ounces of the beverage or a placebo each day of the 12-week study. Women in the study will need to come to the ASU laboratory four times during the study for the collection of blood samples. Participants will receive $500 for their time.

Results from the study, entitled Efficacy of Ingesting ASEA on Disease Risk Factor Change in Overweight/Obese Women: a 12-Week, Randomized Trial, will help determine if ingestion of the dietary supplement beverage improves health in adult women. ASEA, the beverage being tested, contains water, some salt and redox signaling molecules that may help protect and repair cells and restore immune function.

In two previous human studies, ASU showed that drinking ASEA causes a shift in small molecules or metabolites that may translate over a three-month period to an improvement in health. ASU researchers will monitor disease risk factors of the women in the study including arterial stiffness, inflammation, cholesterol status, blood pressure, oxidative stress and capacity, fasting serum glucose and metabolic hormones to determine if there are any health benefits. After the study is over, women who took part will receive a general report summarizing findings of the study and their laboratory and blood tests.
