Loose leaf collection begins today

Loose leaf collection begins today

KANNAPOLIS - City of Kannapolis will begin loose leaf and bagged yard waste collection service on Monday, Oct. 22. This free curbside service will be offered every other week through Friday, Mar. 8, 2013. During this time, yard waste and limbs are collected on the same day as loose leaves, which may be on a different schedule than regular solid waste collection.

Leaves must be placed at the curb or along the ditch line, not in ditches, in rows parallel with street by 7 a.m. on the day of collection to ensure collection on the scheduled day. Leaves mixed with limbs, other yard waste, gravel, glass or other solid matter will not be collected and leaves in garbage containers will not be collected. Leaves must be clear of water meters and fences and placed on the street side of retaining walls. Leaves should also be clear of sidewalks and the street.

Now is the time to prevent cankerworms across Cabarrus

Now is the time to prevent cankerworms across Cabarrus

CONCORD - The fall cankerworm (commonly called inchworms) has become a growing nuisance to trees and property owners in Cabarrus County over the last few years.  Feeding larvae can defoliate and build bothersome webs in many tree species.  Usually, willow oaks are targeted, but other tree species from dogwoods to maples can be affected.

After many years of infesting trees in Charlotte, cankerworms moved into Harrisburg in 2009 and made their way to Concord and Kannapolis in 2010.  Cabarrus cankerworm populations continued to increase in 2011 and 2012. Here are some tips to remember:

  • Cankerworms won’t last forever. Past experience in Cabarrus County indicates the larva stage will be present only about 4 to 5 weeks from the time they hatch out in early spring.
  • Fall cankerworms will not kill a healthy tree in their spring feeding frenzy. If all the leaves are removed, the tree will wait a few weeks and then put out new leaves. After new leaves form, there still will be enough growing season for a healthy tree to recover.
  • The best control for reducing future infestations is tree banding. Place bands on trees in November and monitor them until the larva disappear in April.
  • Spraying is less effective. Since the larva stage is short term, the cankerworms won’t kill the tree and spraying a mature tree is difficult or expensive. Most homeowners will ignore the spring infestation on mature shade trees.
  • If you wish to control fall cankerworms on understory shrubbery during the spring larva stage, any pesticide that controls caterpillars will work on fall cankerworms.

Jon Barber's new venture: Mobile Farm Fresh

Jon Barber's new venture: Mobile Farm Fresh

SALISBURY - Rowan County Commissioner and local business owner Jon Barber is announcing a new business venture for Rowan and Cabarrus Counites.

A press release provided to WBTV spells out what Mobile Farm Fresh is ahead of the debut at this week's Rowan County Fair:

In October 2012, Mobile Farm Fresh, a local non-profit and mobile farmer’s market, will be launched in an effort to bring healthy, local produce to areas that do not have easy access to grocery stores and farmer’s markets.

The program will debut at the Rowan County Agricultural Fair from September 17 until September 22. Schools, worksites, and faith-based organizations offer a unique opportunity to reach a substantial portion of residents in food deserts with messages and interventions to improve health and nutrition.

Collaborating with these organizations, Mobile Farm Fresh will expand the availability of a farmers market with a focus on serving low income individuals and neighborhoods.

The 'pack helps farmers keep cool on the go

KANNAPOLIS - N.C. State University’s Plants for Human Health Institute (PHHI) has developed a new mobile cooling unit for farmers. The five-by-eight-feet refrigerated trailer – called the “Pack ‘N Cool” – is designed to keep fruits and vegetables at ideal temperatures during transport to and from farmers markets or as they’re harvested in farm fields. The Pack ‘N Cool is the program’s latest postharvest quality and food safety project geared toward helping farmers.

Dr. Penelope Perkins-Veazie, professor and postharvest physiologist with PHHI, coordinated the effort to develop a mobile refrigeration unit that agricultural producers can use as a model for building their own versions. The Pack ‘N Cool unit combines the mobility of a cargo trailer with the refrigeration capabilities of a commercial cooler.

With construction spearheaded by Louis Wojciechowski, a lab technician with Perkins-Veazie’s research team, the model unit cost around $3,400 to construct, including a new cargo trailer priced at $1,500 (a pre-owned trailer can reduce costs). Construction guidelines, step-by-step photos and a sample budget are available on the Plants for Human Health Institute website.
